Fellow Travelers,
The majority of best-selling “Christian” books tell us the only way to reach a post-modern culture is to adopt a postmodern outlook. In consequence, many believers have adopted what I call the “Barney Fife” approach to cultural engagement:
Barney: “How do ya fight fire Andy?”
Andy: “With water.”
Barney: “No, no, no! You fight fire with fire!”
As you can see, this new innovative technique completely dispenses with conventionality. The “new” Christians do not refute postmodernism; they simply embrace it with open arms:
The “new” Christians: “How do ya engage a postmodern culture?”
The “old” Christians: “With truth.”
The “new” Christians: “No, no, no! You engage a postmodern culture by becoming postmodern!”
Those who defend the Barney Fife approach believe they are doing Christianity a great service; rescuing the church from fading into obscurity and ushering it into the twenty-first century. Sadly, this move is having quite the opposite effect. Rather than save the Church, post-modern ideology has corroded the true, life changing, message of the gospel and given rise to legalism and intolerance.
The purpose of this website is to encourage Christians to think critically about postmodernism and to question it’s compatibility with Orthodox faith, to promote creativity and the renewal of genuine community within the Church, and to provide Biblical answers to some of the more controversial questions of our time. Above all, the creators of this site desire to glorify the one true God and His Son Jesus Christ. This is postmodernity’s worst nightmare.
Sincerely,
J. Matthan Brown
